| Ginger and Menstrual Cramps A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine compared the efficacy of ginger, ibuprofen and mefenamic acid (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). Study participants were divided into three groups.
- Group One took 250 mg of ginger rhizome four times a day on days 1-3 of their menstrual cycle. - Group Two took 250 mg of mefenamic acid four times a day on days 1-3. - Group Three took 400 mg of ibuprofen four times a day on days 1-3. Assessment was preformed after one menstrual period and the results found that the severity of dysmenorrhea, painful menstrual period, decreased in all groups but no significant differences were found between the groups in pain severity, pain relief or satisfaction. This study is an excellent example of how a natural substance can be just as effective as a pharmacological drug. Why subject your body to the side effects of a manufactured drug when you can get the same results from taking a wonderful herb? |
